1985－1986年任美国伊利诺大学中国学生学者联谊会主席；
1992－1993年任中国留美经济学会会长；
1993年夏天组织并率领中国留美经济 学会考察团赴台湾省做为期两周的经济考察；
1993年发起并组织 （与中国海南改革发展研究院，中国留英经济学会）中国走向社会主义市场经济理论与实践研讨会，100多名中外著名经济学者和政府官员参加；
1993－1994年与林毅夫、张维迎、海闻等发起并组建北京大学中国经济研究中心；
1993年至今，任中国留美经济学会资深研究员、美国学术期刊《中国经济评论》、《亚洲经济期刊》编委；
1995年负责北京大学中国经济研究中心硕士、博士计划的设计，该计划于1996年秋季开始实施；
1996主持创建北京大学经济中心经济学双学位计划，该计划于1996年秋开始实施；
1997年任中国人民银行货币政策委员会副秘书长；
2004年7月，任中国人民银行党委委员、行长助理；
2006年10月至2007年，任中国人民银行党委委员、行长助理兼中国人民银行营业管理部主任、党委书记，国家外汇管理局北京外汇管理部主任；
2007年12月至今，任中国人民银行副行长。
